How Therapy Works
Feeling better during a hard season and changing a pattern are different outcomes.
It's common to feel significantly better after a stretch of therapy and then notice, months or years later, that an old pattern has quietly returned. That doesn't mean the therapy failed, but it's worth understanding why this happens.
A lot of what brings relief early in therapy is symptom-focused, less anxiety, better mood, fewer conflicts. That relief is real and valuable, but it's not always the same as changing the underlying pattern that produced the symptoms in the first place.
Change that holds tends to come from actually shifting the pattern at its root, not just managing its symptoms, which usually takes longer and involves more discomfort along the way. It also tends to require practicing the new pattern in real situations, not just understanding it in session.
A first session is a good place to start building something that lasts.
