There is no universal number, and I would be skeptical of anyone who gives you one without knowing your situation. Research on Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy has found significant reductions in distress, depression, and anxiety after approximately 15 sessions in a 2025 randomized controlled trial (Wiebe et al., 2025). In my experience, clients who attend weekly and remain consistent often notice meaningful shifts within three to six months, and many choose to continue beyond that to deepen and consolidate what they have learned. These are general observations and individual timelines vary.

Factors that influence the timeline

The three stages

EFIT unfolds in three stages, which are stabilization, restructuring, and consolidation. The first stage focuses on building a secure base and understanding your emotional patterns, the second moves toward the more vulnerable emotions and needs beneath them, and the third strengthens the changes you have made. The stages are not strictly separate, and we may return to earlier ones as needed.

A realistic expectation

Attachment patterns developed over time and tend to shift gradually, even when therapy is going well. If you are looking for something that resolves in a handful of sessions, this approach may not be the fastest path. If your goal is lasting change in how you relate to yourself and others, a longer timeline is often a realistic one.
