How Therapy Works
What this approach asks of the process, in practical terms.
Attachment-focused therapy goes further than talk therapy that happens to mention relationships, since it's built around the idea that a lot of adult difficulty, in relationships, in self-worth, in anxiety, traces back to early patterns of connection, and that those patterns can be updated through new relational experience, including the one you build with me.
We spend real time on early history, not for its own sake, but to understand where a current pattern was learned. We also pay close attention to what happens between us in the room, like how you respond to me being late, to a disagreement, or to a compliment. That's not incidental. The relationship itself becomes one of the main places change happens.
This approach asks for more vulnerability than symptom-management therapy, because it involves looking honestly at your own history and your own patterns, including the ones that are uncomfortable to admit. It's a good fit for people who want to understand the root of something, not just manage the symptoms of it.
