It's a common and often demoralizing realization: a new relationship starts, and somewhere in the first few months, a familiar dynamic starts showing up again. The names change, the pattern doesn't.

Why This Happens

People tend to unconsciously recreate what's familiar, since familiar, even when uncomfortable, registers as safer to the nervous system than unfamiliar. This can also show up as being drawn to a particular type of partner, or unconsciously behaving in ways that recreate an old dynamic regardless of who the other person is.

Breaking the Pattern

Recognizing the pattern is the first step, but recognizing it usually isn't enough to stop it. Therapy tends to work on this at the level of the pattern itself, often using the therapeutic relationship as a live example of the dynamic, so it can be worked with directly instead of just discussed.
