Private-pay therapy in Florida generally runs somewhere between $100 and $250 per session, depending on the therapist's license level, experience, location, and specialty, and rates in Tampa tend to fall in the middle of that range. My own rate is $120 for a standard 50-minute session and $195 for an extended 90-minute session, which reflects my training and the focus of the sessions.

Working outside of insurance

Billing insurance for mental health care requires a formal diagnosis, which then becomes part of a record that insurers can access. It can also mean that sessions are capped, denied, or restricted to certain diagnoses and treatment approaches. Working private-pay removes both of these constraints, which costs more out of pocket and allows what happens in session to be guided by what is useful for you.

Reimbursement

If your insurance plan includes out-of-network benefits, you can often submit a superbill, which is an itemized receipt with the necessary codes, for partial reimbursement. I provide these on request. It is worth calling your insurer and asking specifically about out-of-network reimbursement for outpatient mental health before assuming that private-pay therapy is out of reach.

Additional payment options

HSA and FSA funds can typically be used for therapy. I also hold a limited number of sliding-scale spots, and if the fee is the main thing standing between you and starting, it is worth asking about directly during the consultation call. More details are available on the insurance and rates page.
