Private-pay therapy in Florida generally runs somewhere between $100 and $250 per session, depending on the therapist's license level, experience, location, and specialty. Rates in Tampa tend to sit in the middle of that range. My own rate is $150 for a standard 50-minute session and $250 for an extended 90-minute session, which I've priced based on my training and what these sessions involve, not to be the cheapest or the most expensive option out there.

Working Outside of Insurance

Billing insurance for mental health requires giving the client a formal diagnosis, which then becomes part of a permanent record insurers can access. It also means sessions can be capped, denied, or restricted to certain approved diagnoses and treatment approaches, regardless of what's useful for the client in front of you. Working private-pay removes both of those constraints. It costs more out of pocket, but it means what happens in session isn't shaped around what a plan will authorize.

Reimbursement

If your insurance plan includes out-of-network benefits, you can often submit a superbill (an itemized receipt with the necessary codes) for partial reimbursement, even though the therapist isn't in-network. I provide these on request. It's worth calling your insurer directly and asking specifically about out-of-network mental health reimbursement before assuming private-pay therapy is entirely out of reach.

Additional Payment Options

HSA and FSA funds can typically be used for therapy, which effectively reduces the cost by whatever your tax rate is. Some therapists, myself included, hold a limited number of sliding-scale spots. It's worth asking directly if fee is the thing standing between you and starting.

I'm glad to talk through cost, session length, or payment options directly.
